How to Transfer a Title

Location:
  • Visit us at our Main Office or Branch Office
Documents Required:
  1. Original title
  2. Photo ID for seller
  3. Kentucky ID or Social Security Numbers for all new owners
  4. Commonwealth of Kentucky insurance policy including the following:
      • Name of the insured
      • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
      • Effective Date (current)
        • a current effective date if coverage already exists, or
        • a policy period that includes today’s date
      • NAIC code
        • The insurer’s NAIC (National Association of Insurance Commissioners) company code — a 5-digit number identifying the insurance company.
  5. Title lien statement, if applicable
Important Notes:
  • All liens must be satisfied prior to transfer or be accompanied by an original title lien statement with an original signature from the lender.

  • Any delinquent taxes on the vehicle or owed by the purchaser must be paid before the transfer can be completed.

  • If more than one seller is listed on the title with “AND,” both signatures must be notarized.

Fees:
  • $9 title fee
  • 6% road usage tax on the purchase price
  • $21 renewal fee (base amount; fees may vary for specialized plates and vehicles over 10,000 lbs)
  • $22 lien filing fee, if applicable
