Salvage, Rebuilt and Junk Titles

A motor vehicle that is no longer roadworthy can have its title converted to a “salvage” title. Salvaged vehicles may be repaired and then apply for a rebuilt title to be allowed on the road again.

Salvage Title- Current Owner

Salvaging a title that is already in your name

Documents Required:

  • Kentucky certificate of title
  • Current or expired license plate
  • A lien release, if applicable (TC 96-187)

Important Notes:

  • Salvage titled vehicles are not legal for road use and will not be issued a license plate

Fees:

  • $6 salvage title fee

Transferring a Salvage Title

Transferring a salvage title into your name for the first time

Documents Required:

  • Original certificate or title
  • Current or expired Kentucky license plate
  • A lien release, if applicable (TC 96-187)

Important Notes:

  • Salvage titled vehicles are not legal for road use and will not be issued a license plate
  • Salvage titles are not required to be transferred into your name prior to beginning the rebuilt vehicle process

Fees:

  • 6% usage tax upon transfer
  • $9.00 salvage title fee

Applying for a Rebuilt Title

Apply to have a previously salvaged vehicle allowed on the road again.

Documents Required:

  • Original salvage title
  • Kentucky Driver’s License
  • Sheriff’s inspection
  • Application for Kentucky Certificate of Title/VTR (TC 96-182)
  • Kentucky affidavit of Motor Vehicle Assembled from Wrecked or Salvage Motor Vehicles (TC 96-215 Form)
  • ​Labor Statement for Rebuilt or Total-Loss Vehicle, completed by the shop or individual(s) who made the repairs (TC 96-353)
  • Receipts/invoices of new or used parts
  • At least TWO photos of the vehicle before and after repairs have been made

Important Notes

  • The rebuilt process could take up to six weeks for approval

Fees:

  • $9 title fee
  • $21 renewal fee (base amount; fees may vary for specialized plates and vehicles over 10,000 lbs)
  • 6% road usage tax on the purchase price if the vehicle is not already in your name

Junking a Kentucky Title

This process prevents future property tax assessments for this vehicle.

Documents Required:

  • Original Kentucky Title – On the face of the title the owner must sign and date where the clerk stamps “JUNKED”.
  • Payment of any existing property taxes
  • Affidavit of junk must be signed and notarized

Fees:

  • $1.00 junk fee
