Location:

  • Visit us at our Main Office or Branch Office

Documents Required:

  • Original certificate of title signed by the seller
  • Kentucky Application for Certificate of Title/VTR (TC 96-182) signed by the seller and notarized
  • Valid Kentucky ID or Social Security Number for all new owners
  • Commonwealth of Kentucky insurance policy including the following:
      • Name of the insured
      • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
      • Effective Date (current)
        • a current effective date if coverage already exists, or
        • a policy period that includes today’s date
      • NAIC code
        • The insurer’s NAIC (National Association of Insurance Commissioners) company code — a 5-digit number identifying the insurance company.
  • VIN inspection completed by the Sheriff’s Office
  • Title lien statement, if applicable
  • Proof of usage tax paid, if the vehicle was purchased from an out-of-state dealer

Important Notes:

  • If the VTR is not signed by the seller and notarized, usage tax will be assessed based on the full retail value of the vehicle.
  • If more than one seller is listed on the title with “AND,” all listed sellers must sign.
  • All liens must be satisfied prior to transfer, or the transfer must be accompanied by an original title lien statement with an original lender signature.
  • Any delinquent taxes for the purchaser(s) must be paid before the transfer can be completed.
  • Any delinquent taxes associated with the vehicle must be paid prior to transfer.

Fees:

  • $9 title fee
  • $21 renewal fee (base amount; fees may vary for specialized plates and vehicles over 10,000 lbs)
  • 6% road usage tax
  • $22 lien filing fee, if applicable
