Assumed Name Filings, Renewals & Withdrawals
When starting a business, we strongly recommend beginning the process on the Secretary of State’s website, sos.ky.gov. There you will find a business planning tool that can help you determine the type of business that is right for you and what type of filings are needed in order to register your business with both State and Local government.
Per the Kentucky Secretary of State, “If a sole proprietorship is operated under any name that doesn’t include the owner’s real name, a Certificate of Assumed Name must be filed with the County Clerk in the county where the individual maintains their principal place of business.”
Certificate of Assumed Name
If you have determined you need to complete a Certificate of Assumed Name for your business, you can access the printable certificate here. The filing fee is $46.
Renewal of Assumed Name
Assumed Name registrations are effective for a term of 5 years from the filing date. A renewal certificate must be filed within 6 months prior to the expiration date. You can access the printable renewal certificate here. The filing fee is $46.
Withdrawal of Assumed Name
To withdraw an Assumed Name, a Certificate of Withdrawal of Assumed Name must be put to record in the same office where the original was filed. You can access the printable withdrawal certificate here. The filing fee is $46.
